On Monday 23.01.23 EUROAVIA Munich had the pleasure to invite Amazilia Aerospace GmbH to our campus in Garching. In a guest lecture Dr.-Ing. Simon Schatz, head of Flight Controls, talked about flight tests of control systems for UAVs to about 30 interested students of TUM. Afterwards there was a small networking session accompanied by some snacks.
What was the guest lecture about?
In the lecture, Dr.-Ing. Simon Schatz, Head of Flight Control, gave an insight into the flight testing of UAV control systems and how Amazilia implements them on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A cargo aircraft project was used to explain the development steps and challenges of these tests. This also went along with explaining the benefits of using such systems as well as listing the measures taken to minimize the associated risks when using UAVs. Furthermore, many examples of ground and flight tests were shown to demonstrate the different types of tests at Amazilia.
What were the takeaways?
Overall, participants were pleased with the event’s content and structure. They found topics such as retrofitting manual controls on an aircraft with autopilot systems and upgrading them to remotely piloted or completely unmanned aircraft to be quite insightful. The key takeaway for the participants was a thorough overview of how some of the concepts that they learn separately during their studies are implemented in unison with each other during the UAS development process.

By now, drones come across the average Aerospace student regularly! On the 2nd of June, EUROAVIA Munich once again organized an Online Event with ESG, a System Integrator from Fürstenfeldbruck. For this event, we invited Tim Mehling, Product Manager UxS and Flight Test Engineer at ESG to talk about “UAS Onboard Safety Systems”. In the run-up to the event, this topic already aroused interest, and so the atmosphere was once again very motivated.
As usual the Speaker delivered a very technical presentation and convinced the audience with his far-sightedness in the topic of “Drone Security”. Especially exciting was the connection to the delivery of a recent ESG Guest at an EUROAVIA event in 2020! Back then, Ms. Hildenbrand delivered a workshop about “Drone Defense”. As Mr. Mehling put it during his delivery:
“Our departments complement each other very well, our goals are the challenges of the other, and the other way around”
. While Ms. Hildenbrands expertise is reconnaissance and defense of unknown UAS, it is the goal of Mr. Mehlings department, to ensure functionality and licensing of UAS through appropriate Onboard Security Systems. Several technologies were presented, and along with the technology also the respective motivation for each technology in the framework of the European SORA-licensing criteria.
It was very interesting to get insight to the world of Licensing. Especially rewarding was insight into the SORA-criteria, for which we already got requests previously to the event.
As usual after the delivery, we engaged in an exciting discussion about Drone Security, answering all open questions. The discussion once again displayed the curiosity of EUROAVIAns, and how diverse ideas about one topic can be.

Since the TNT is one of the longest and most resource-intensive events, that EUROAVIA hosts, the organization team here in Munich relies on Sponsoring and Donation. We work hard on a portfolio of Sponsors and Donors, that help us finance the event without too much deficit. During the event, most of the costs are composed of the eight-night stay of participants and trainers and catering. In addition to that, other matters of expense are the Final Dinner and Cultural Night, as well as training materials.
Thanks to our registration as a non-profit organization, Euroavia Munich can issue every donor with a donation receipt that helps to deduct the donation form taxes. We will also use every donation for a specific purpose, which makes it easy to understand for which part of the organization of the event we will use the money for. As for Sponsoring from companies, Euroavia will offer additional services, for example in displaying the companies name and include it in the events schedule. So we’d like to see Sponsors combine a Training Session from their Training Departments with time, in which they can present the company to the participants.
TNT stands for “Train New Trainers”. It is the largest Training-Event within the EUROAVIA Training System (ETS). The ETS is a Working Group, that is organized by EUROAVIA International. That means Euroavia Munich will organize the TNT hand in hand with our International Representation from the ETS. We have a clear distribution of responsibility:
Euroavia Munich will provide the organizational framework. That means catering and accommodation on the one hand, but also to have our members be shoulder to shoulder with the participants so that they find their way in Munich and feel home here for their stay. The well known Final Dinner, as well as the City Tour and the Cultural Night also will be organized by us.
The ETS, on the other hand, will provide us with the Trainer Team, which in the end will actually do all of the many training sessions, that together form the TNT experience. Normally the ETS Board sends six trainers out of their own ranks. This TNT we plan to have a trainer team, what is Trainer Team with only Euroavia trainers.
The goal of the TNT is to expand the ETS’ trainer pool and to implement long term goals, e.g. to have a training session in every single international event. We also strive to further spread the spirit of soft skills within our Euroavia community.
April 2019: Euroavia Munich has set herself the goal to organize an international Event within the next Business Year. What would rather come in mind than the just-completed TNT in Leuven? Highly motivated our Secretary came back from this Event and quickly got the rest of the board on board.
The TNT is a training event within the frame of the EUROAVIA Training System (ETS). Please go on and read about the ETS in the next article. In early summer we created working teams, that quickly achieved to build an organizational framework for the event. Now we can proudly say, that dates and schedule are finished, as well as accommodation and a catering plan.
Since the TNT will be one day longer even than the TNT in 2019, and we thus have guests from all corners of Europe from the 22nd to the 31st of March 2020, we are now looking for sponsors to get this event going most fashionably.
Beginning in March EUROAVIA Munich started a collaboration with EESTEC LC Munich. The last weekend before Christmas, we were invited to join one of their soft skills trainings. The training took place in the for us rather unfamiliar city centre. After our trainers from Munich and Karlsruhe introduced themselves, we got to know each other better. Some familiar faces were among those from EESTEC who had joined us for our company visit to Airbus in November. Though we met most of the participants for the first time, it didn’t take long before we started socialising. During the workshop we learned a lot about communication, especially about negotiation skills and giving feedback. The day was over in no time and we had the chance to conclude the nice evening with mulled wine and pizza.
Thanks a lot to EESTEC and the trainers for the invitation and making this workshop possible. We’re looking forward to more shared events. It sure won’t be the last…
October 28, ten first years and members had the possibility to visit and get to know the second biggest airport in Germany. After a routine security check we enjoyed a 90 minutes long bus tour around the airport grounds. We got a good look at the aircrafts from up close and watched them being (un-)loaded, rolling on the taxiway, taking off and landing. Besides the terminals we saw the snow ploughs, gritters and de-icing machines. We even had a short introduction into the work of the airport firefighters.
The cargo terminals and hangars of Lufthansa CityLine were also included in the tour. During all the tour we were told interesting facts about the airport, its history and all the airlines. Our tour guide knew all the airlines and where which aircraft was heading or coming from.
All in all we spent an exiting 2 hours learning about all the processes that make an airport work, from a perspective you normally don’t experience as a travelling passenger.
18 July 2017, we had the opportunity to spend an interesting afternoon at IABG. After an introduction about the structure and history of the company and a generous lunch, we were given a tour of the testing facilities for the space sector. As we had to observe clean room conditions we had to put on full gear first.
We visited the vibration test facilities where vibrations shocks and accelerations are simulated. Afterwards we saw the acoustic laboratories where the structure is tested for noise and acoustic stresses occurring during launch. We were able to take a look into one of the EMC chambers where systems are tested for their electromagnetic compatibility. Finally, we visited the thermal vacuum chambers for simulating and testing under space conditions.
All in all, we were offered a fascinating insight into the space flight test centre of IABG. A warm thank you to Ms Peters, Mr Pischel and Mr Bertram for this unique opportunity!
This June, Le Bourget, the biggest aerospace fair and air show, made the hearts of our members beat faster. The local group of Paris organised a Fly-In and invited EUROAVIAns from all over Europe to be part of this event. Obviously, an offer like this had to run out of places very quickly. So EUROAVIA Munich decided to organise a 4-day trip to Paris for their members.
Soon after arriving at the fair, we were completely captivated. Above our heads planes and helicopters showed their artistic manoeuvres and precise formation skills; on the airfield an Ariane 5, an A380 and many others were shining in the sun; in the exhibition halls the companies presented their newest developments and technologies. Thanks to the tickets sponsored by MTU, we had the opportunity to visit during the trade visitor days, during which significantly more models and planes are displayed and the company representatives seem more willing to answer all the questions students normally have. That’s how we established contacts to the industry, received opportunities for jobs, internships or final theses, enjoyed almost private tours through planes and came to talk to the pilots. Providing tickets for the International Board as well, we had the chance to meet them at the fair and together take part in a guided tour at the MTU stand. To make sure we survive the day, MTU offered us drinks and food, as well as answers to the thousands of questions we had for the experts in their VIP lounge afterwards. At this point a special thanks to MTU for providing the tickets and to all the helpful employees on-site!
Le Bourget is big: It was impossible to see every interesting bit of it on one day. So we decided to visit it the following day as well. That night, after we satisfied our curiosity and pushed our legs to their limits, we were happy to fall into our beds.
Despite the marathon-like distances we walked the days at the fair, we did not miss our chance to explore Paris. We went down the catacombs, up the Eiffel Tower, had crêpes in the old city and an evening picnic at the Seine. In short: We enjoyed the city to its fullest. So, when we were boarding onto our plane back to Munich that Sunday night we all knew: This will not have been the last time we paid Paris and Le Bourget a visit. We are looking forward to our next trip!

May 16, we held our first project meeting of the summer term.
Nine dedicated members met for one evening to actively help shaping the future of EUROAVIA Munich. Besides accounts of past company visits and international events, an overview of the International Working Groups and planned events for the remainder of the year was given. Current and upcoming tasks werde discussed and assigned to motivated members.
Many exciting events are planned that need to be organised. For this reason, regular project meetings will from now on take place in addition to our monthly “Stammtisch”. During all these meetings, teamwork and personal exchange among members is strengthened by having fun and achieve a common purpose in a team effort.
